Balangir district; one of the 8 KBK
districts of Orissa state is located in
the Western part of Orissa state. The
district is spread over in 6569 Square
Kilometer in the hill track. The
district has 3 Sub-division, 6 Tahasils,
14 blocks and 285 Gram Panchayats, 1792
villages. The district has only 4 urban
areas.

The district has 22% Scheduled Tribe and
15.4% Scheduled Caste population.

Out of the total population 88.5%
population of the district resides in
rural area.

The sex ratio of the district is 983
females per 1000 males

hilly and sloppy lands

Balangir experiences extreme climate; in
summer temperature varies from 45-49
degree Celsius though out the district.

Of the total 356756 households in the
district 62% (against Orissa average
46.4%) are Below the Poverty Line (BPL).

Migration to work to other states is a
regular phenomenon of the district.
Majority of marginal farmers and
landless laborers (about 1 lakh
laborers) migrate to other peripheral
district with the help of local labor
contractors in search of their
livelihood, where also they get terrible
exploited both financially as well as
physically.

As per State Aids
Cell data by October 2007, eighty
persons of the district are
found HIV
positive. Out of them 5 died due to
AIDS. Majority of the HIV affected
person are migratory laborers.

According to an unconfirmed data
presented in Assembly in February 2008
session, 2600 farmers have committed
suicide in the state since last 5 years
