Renovation of water Harvesting Structure and land reclamation:
Domnikata at Bankbija village (District Sonepur) was renovated with active community participation during 1999-2001; CAPART extended help for his project. 55 beneficiaries got benefit of this work, out of them 49 beneficiary were marginal farmer with land possession of less than 2-5 acre. Irrigation potential was created for 55 House holds through this 7 acre WHS.52 family did Land reclamation work with 50% self-contribution. In total reclamation was done on 42.8 acre land and in 2002 10 beneficiaries cultivated Rabi-crop with paddy in 8 acre land across the WHS. Village level management Committee took over the total charge of the WHS for the future maintenance & water distribution. The committee also initiated Pisciculture in the WHS, which also contributed income to the local community. Before renovation the small water logging whatever was available was canalized by the Gauntiar (Richest Farmer of the village) only, after creation of the WHS the management committee passed a Resolution that none can cut the boundary of the WHS, only water can be lifted by pumps. This system in one hand curbed dominance of rich and on other hand protected the water right of all poor beneficiaries.

Livelihood Opportunity

In Balangir district annually around 80,000 extremely poor land-less/ marginal farmers most of them are tribal —migrate to neighboring states to find livelihood opportunity. They spend 7-8 months (November to May/June) out of their home, live in extremely difficulty, face assault, exploitation; even girls/women are exploited sexually/raped/killed, children lose their schooling, care and nutrition. They live like family always in transit and they work like bonded labor whether in their own village or outside.

We have started to study the situation and interacting with community to find out people’s option of livelihood and sustainable income-generation.

Village Resource Development plan:

Recently since January 2007, we have started to work in Three villages; Ghantobahal in Muribahal Block and Lukapada, Patalpada in Bangomunda Block of Balangir District. Objective of the plan to test methods and find out strategies to make villages self-reliant in Economic Resources, Livelihood generation and create Food security. We are extending Awareness & IEC activity on Health issues as the first step. During June we have mobilized 35 marginal farmers of two villages (Lukapada and Patalpada) and Trained them on SRI Techniques of Paddy cultivation. also they are trained on Vermi-compost and a first lesson on Bio-diversity management.
